Project:
Pike County Justice Center
Location:
Pikeville, Kentucky
In
planning the Pike County Jail & Court Complex, Pike County officials
wished to fulfill two needs - expanded court related space and a
larger and code compliant detention center. This combination detention
and court complex is a multi-level building with lower level parking.
The
facility was intentionally oversized to allow for both future County
inmate growth and to bring in revenue by housing inmates from other
counties to help defray the cost of annual jail operations.
The court complex includes district and circuit courtrooms, offices,
conference rooms, libraries and public areas. The project
was funded in part by both the Local Correctional Facilities Construction
Authority and Administrative Office of the Courts.
The
160-bed detention center includes maximum, medium and minimum confinement
areas for adult males, adult females and juveniles. Separate
ancillary spaces, i.e., multi-purpose room, booking, visitation
and conference areas, are provided to meet the statutory requirements.
Design
of the project began in July 1987, and was completed in June 1988.
The project was bid under a construction manager, with individual
packages prepared as needed, on a fast-track schedule. Construction
was completed and confinement began in 1990.
