Martin County Justice Center
Location:
Inez, Kentucky
The
Martin County Fiscal Court - in conjunction with the Administrative
Office of the Courts, and based on their lack of much needed judicial
space - decided in 1992 to fund construction of a courts building
for the County. The previous court space was housed in the
County courthouse, constructed between 1938 and 1941 by the Federal
Government PWA program. Even though it is a large, two-story
structure that accommodated both county offices and judicial areas,
the County's and Court's need for space was continually increasing.
The
present courts building is also two stories with 13,300 square feet
of space. The Circuit Clerk area and the District courtroom
and its related office and conference spaces are on the first floor.
The second floor contains the Circuit courtroom and its accompanying
areas.
The
building has a driven pile foundation on caissons with steel joist
framing on load bearing masonry with steel beam and column framing.
CMW handled all phases of the work from planning to landscaping
and furnishings. As with all of our more recent courthouse
projects, this facility complies with The Americans With Disabilities
Act (1990) requirements.
Certain
exterior features of the County courthouse were duplicated on the
new Courts building. Combining a rough exterior, textured
look with flattened classical style details gives the building a
compatible look that blends with the older courthouse.
