Project:
Madison County Family Court Facility
Location:
Richmond, Kentucky
The
City of Richmond / Madison County District Court Complex was created
within the existing historical city of the Richmond City Hall building.
This structure was originally constructed in the late 1890s.
CMW's
task was to provide an adaptive re-use for this magnificent building
all the while being very sensitive to the tremendous historical
importance and impact that this building has within the City of
Richmond. Very close attention was paid to the existing exterior
form that the building exhibited. While interior renovations
compromised the original room layouts, the exterior of the building
maintained its original character.
One
the most imposing tasks in this project was to provide an addition
to the building. The exterior of the existing building is
constructed of native limestone and sandstone. Every effort
was made to obtain the same type of sandstone that was used on the
original building. However, the quarry that produced this
stone was no longer in existence. In an effort to match the
existing stone color and pattern of the existing building, CMW enlisted
the aid of a commercially manufactured cast stone product to recreate
the look of the original building. ADA compliance was also
part of the renovation project. Additionally, many of the
architectural accoutrements were removed and reinstalled on the
addition in order to allow the addition to become one with the original
structure, thereby displaying a form that one cannot distinguish
the existing building from the addition. This project was completed
in March of 1999.
