What you need to know about criminal justice architecture before you build
Project: Kenton County Detention Center

Location: Covington, Kentucky

The design challenge of this project was to place a 262 bed, full service jail to house male, female and juvenile inmates in minimum, medium and maximum security custody in an existing high rise office building and meet all applicable codes and standards.

The office building was not initially constructed to support the heavy weight normally associated with a confinement facility.   After a detailed structural analysis of the existing building, CMW selected a combination of lightweight precast panels and security plaster systems to solve the weight problem while providing required security.

The jail occupies four floors of the existing building and is served by a security elevator from a ground level sallyport.   The lower level serves as the inmate admission, booking, detox, holding and release area, along with the inmate and kitchen entrances and housing for minimum custody inmates. The eighth floor houses juvenile residents as well as some adult inmates.   The jail's ninth and tenth floors house the remainder of the inmates, including federal inmates.   The eighth floor houses adult residents, but juveniles are also housed on this floor.   This 24-bed juvenile area contains a conference room, visitation space, a multi-purpose room and booking area, along with four dorms and seven cells.
