Project:
Fulton County Courthouse Renovation
Location:
Hickman, Kentucky
The
Fulton County Courthouse, built in the Mississippi River town and
county seat of Hickman in 1903, is listed on the National Registry
of Historic Places. The Fiscal Court, in conjunction with
the Administrative Office of the Courts, had two objectives - updating
this historic courthouse to make it more functional, ADA compliant
and obtaining more space for the court system. While satisfying
the needs of the Fiscal Court and AOC, the County's objective was
also met by the historic restoration of this eclectic building.
The
renovation included both interior and exterior alterations.
Large wood bridge trusses were removed from the attic and replaced
with a compact, seismic structural steel frame, providing an additional
floor without altering any aspect of the exterior facades.
Updating
the interior involved rewiring for new telephone / communications
and computer systems, as well as the audio-visual recording equipment
in each courtroom. The interior finishes and furnishings - even
the lighting - were brought back to the period in which the courthouse
was constructed.
The building was
made completely accessible to the handicapped, and all systems were
made to comply with the Kentucky Building Code. |
