What you need to know about criminal justice architecture before you build
Project: Breathitt County Justice Center

Location: Jackson, Kentucky

This project consists of a three-story building with a 5,000 square foot basement.  Basement size was increased from that of the original design (957 square feet) to include a Vehicle Sallyport, one Group Holding Cell, three smaller Holding Cells, Building Storage, a Mechanical Room, a Secure Entrance and the Elevator Machine Room, which was previously located on the First Floor. Space has been provided for two courtrooms (1-circuit, 1-district), related judge chambers, jury rooms, and related support spaces, law library, dual use hearing / grand jury / family court room with support spaces, prisoner handling areas, Circuit Clerk offices, CDW offices, and Pretrial Services offices.

The building is composed of a structural steel frame on concrete foundation with non-load bearing exterior walls of brick veneer with cast stone accents and interior non-load bearing drywall partitions. Systems include water source heat pump HVAC system with cooling tower and make-up air rooftop air handler, fire suppression system, fire alarm, electrical lighting and power, communication, and lightning protection.  The Site includes restricted access to the prisoner vehicle sallyport, secure judges parking and staff and public parking, and related sidewalks and landscaping.
