Project:
Boyd County Detention Center
Location:
Catlettsburg, Kentucky
When
Boyd County officials first began discussing the construction of
a new jail, the existing detention center was more than 50 years
old. After the 1983 Kentucky Jail Standards were put in place,
the old jail was found to be non-compliant in many areas.
Because of this, and a shortage of needed bed space, the County
made the decision to construct a new facility. This new facility
adjoins the present Boyd County Courthouse in downtown Catlettsburg.
The
Boyd County Detention Center is a 93-bed facility that houses male
adults, female adults and juveniles in a single-level building.
Like many of CMW's detention center designs, the confinement
areas at this facility are podular and circle a centralized control
room. This arrangement facilitates improved operations and
provides good site lines.
The
juvenile confinement section has a capacity of four and is classified
as intermittent juvenile holding, meaning that the housing of a
juvenile cannot be for more than 24 hours. Included in this
section are visitation; search and shower; conference and multipurpose;
and call areas.
Construction
on the detention center began in November 1989 and was completed
in January of 1991.
