Project:
Boone County Justice Center
Location:
Burlington, Kentucky
Boone
County's court system serves one of the fastest growing areas of
the state. With cramped space, more judges than courtrooms,
and multiple locations for services, the court system needed a new
facility that consolidated the system in one location for efficiency
of operations, to improve services to the public, and to provide
for future growth. This four-story, 80,000 square foot facility
is the solution and includes space for future growth. Two
courtrooms each are provided for District, Family and Circuit court
functions with related support spaces, including attorney client
conference, witness, jury deliberation, jury assembly, and judges
chambers. A flexible use hearing room doubles as the grand
jury deliberation suite. Prisoners are held in a basement
central holding area and transported using a secure elevator to
holding areas between courtrooms at each floor. Fundamental
to the design was controlling the high volume components of public
traffic flow.
All
Circuit Clerk office space and public access counters including
drivers' license and the related Kentucky State Police driver testing
function, and traffic court are located on the first floor. Office
space for Administrative Office of the Courts support services,
including Court Designated Worker and Pre Trial Services, is provided
in a layout that permits those services 24 hour, 7 day office access
without affecting the security of the court staff areas.
Satellite office space is provided for the County Attorney and Commonwealth's
Attorney.
The
facility is completely equipped with security and communication
technologies that provide the court system unparalleled flexibility
and opportunities with information and procedural management.
Construction was completed in August 2002 at an estimated cost of
$12,000,000.
