Project:
Ballard County Courthouse Renovation
Location:
Wickliffe, Kentucky
The Ballard County Courthouse in Western Kentucky is listed on the
National Registry of Historic Places. The renovation solved a number
of deficiencies in the existing building, including handicap accessibility,
inadequate public toilet facilities and program space allocation.
Other prime concerns included the aesthetic significance of the
building facades, site orientation, position in the community and
the location of the courthouse in seismic Zone 3. Preservation of
the site also guided the development of the project.
Updating the interior involved rewiring for new telephone, communication
and computer systems, as well as providing audio-visual recording
equipment in each courtroom. The interior finishes and furnishings
- even the lighting - were brought back to the period in which the
courthouse was constructed.
The building was made completely accessible to the handicapped,
and all systems were
made to comply with the Kentucky Building Code.
